*PS. Some of these are (dare I say) unpopular opinions… industry secrets… but I’m gonna share them with you! You deserve the best.

Look for an Artist who strikes the perfect balance.

It is too easy these days to get caught up in epic makeup transformations, entertaining reels, and instagram worthy looks. Many artists feel the pressure to capture attention & likes and forget that it’s emotion, service, and true artistry that is most important on a wedding day. So, hen you look through portfolios and instagram feeds make sure you are finding the right balance between:

  • instagram-able makeup and professional wedding photography. Their work should blow you away in a ring light but also in professional wedding photography. This showcases that their artistry and attention to detail works in all environments and mediums!

  • glamorous transformation and natural radiance. I am obsessed with a full glam, flawless bridal look. But my work also isn’t so shocking that you feel caked and uncomfortable. My clients know that it will be a bit more than what they’re used to, but also know it’s required for longevity and professional photography. Look at the details of the Artist’s photos. If you don’t see any pores and the whites of the Client’s eyes are paper white… chances are that work is face-tuned. I told you I was dropping bombs.

Trust your Artist.

Now that you know how to spot a true professional- let’s talk about trust. Creating safety, love, and a trust is so paramount for me because creating your dream Bridal Look is so much more than just the makeup! It’s about connection and communication. Your Makeup Artist is one of the few people that will quite literally be in your personal bubble first thing in the morning. You will share stories and the vibe will be set depending on the way your morning goes. I’m not sure if anyone else thinks about this, but I am an introverted empath so the people I have in my space effect my energy A LOT!

Trust your Artist to:

  • select the right eyelashes for you. If you’ve scoped out all of their work (selfies and professional photography) you should love all of the work you see and trust that the lashes chosen for you are just right. If they feel too heavy or uncomfortable, always say something but don’t be afraid of a fluttery, lifted lash.

  • always do blush & body glow. Lashes, blush, and body glow are my love language. I don’t need to say anything more.

  • create a morning of beauty schedule. Your Artist should you provide you will a schedule and be able to communicate the beauty timeline effectively. Allow them enough time to work their magic. A lot of venues suck…. and when I say suck I mean that they don’t allow you enough time to complete services in the Bridal Suite. If you Artists need more time communicate effectively so no services are ever rushes.

  • show you the value of their pricing. This one is a little touchy because everyone has a desired budget and money can be a loaded topic, but I’m going to speak to it. We’re not only talking about money here- we’re really talking about your experience. You may get sticker shock when you see the packages of some Artists. You may even think “wow, whenever you add the word Wedding to anything the price skyrockets”…. truth bomb approaching… and that’s because it should. Many Artist’s specialize in Bridal Makeup because they truly feel passionate and devoted to their craft and their Clients. They take on only a select few brides a year so they can give the utmost attention to every step of the journey. Of course, its up to you and you can schedule a more “glam and go” type service for your Wedding… but I’m guessing if you’re on this blog post that’s not really what you want. Most Artists will arrive early in the morning to your location with clean brushes and a 65 pound kit filled with tens of thousands of dollars worth of products… they will communicate effectively and work cheerfully with all of your other vendors… and they will dedicate their day to you. When you book your Artist, you are not just scheduling a Trial and a Wedding Day appointment. You are bringing a Specialist onto your team and they are on the journey with you. Keep an eye on your desired Artist- see how they show up on social media and listen closely to the reviews and experiences people share with them. It matters. The right Makeup Artist will align with your values and give you a 5 star experience before you’re even booked. Allow your Artist to show you their value.
